Relationships Between Parents and Early Childhood Teachers PDF

Strong partnerships between home and school are essential for coordinating high quality care and education, and for supporting young children's development. This research sought to explore the multidimensional nature of parent-teacher, or cocaring, relationships, for families utilizing full-time, center-based childcare for their infants or toddlers. A model of coparenting, or how parents work together in their roles as parents, served as the main theoretical framework for this investigation. In the first phase of the study, 10 parent-teacher dyads participated in semi-structured interviews about a specific cocaring relationship. In this sample, all families were receiving subsidized childcare. Using an iterative, inductive analysis as well as a deductive analysis based on definitions of key coparenting dimensions, three main cocaring themes were identified: communication, support vs. undermining, and childrearing agreement vs. disagreement. In the second phase, 90 parents of infants and toddlers, about a fourth of whom were receiving subsidized childcare, completed questionnaires about a specific cocaring relationship, their parental involvement, the quality of their relationship with their child, and the child's social and emotional functioning. Exploratory factor analysis of the questionnaire developed to assess the cocaring relationship revealed a three factor structure: Support, Undermining, and Endorsement & Agreement. In regression analyses, after controlling for parents' education, parents' perceptions of cocaring support were positively related to all forms of parental involvement: home-based, school-based, and home-school connections. Parents' perceptions of undermining were also positively related to school-based involvement, whereas perceptions of endorsement & agreement were positively related to home-school connections. In addition, when parents characterized their cocaring relationships as more supportive, or higher in endorsement & agreement, parent-child closeness was higher. However, parents' perception of greater undermining in the cocaring relationship was associated with lower parent-child closeness. Regression analyses also revealed that after controlling for parent-child closeness and conflict, undermining in the cocaring relationship was associated with higher levels of child dysregulation. This research lends validity to the cocaring construct and adds to our understanding of the importance of early parent-teacher relationships for children and families.

How Children Succeed PDF
By:Paul Tough
Published on 2012-09-04 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

“Drop the flashcards—grit, character, and curiosity matter even more than cognitive skills. A persuasive wake-up call.”—People Why do some children succeed while others fail? The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter more have to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, optimism, and self-control. How Children Succeed introduces us to a new generation of researchers and educators, who, for the first time, are using the tools of science to peel back the mysteries of character. Through their stories—and the stories of the children they are trying to help—Tough reveals how this new knowledge can transform young people’s lives. He uncovers the surprising ways in which parents do—and do not—prepare their children for adulthood. And he provides us with new insights into how to improve the lives of children growing up in poverty. This provocative and profoundly hopeful book will not only inspire and engage readers, it will also change our understanding of childhood itself. “Illuminates the extremes of American childhood: for rich kids, a safety net drawn so tight it’s a harness; for poor kids, almost nothing to break their fall.”—New York Times “I learned so much reading this book and I came away full of hope about how we can make life better for all kinds of kids.”—Slate

Ethical Conduct of Clinical Research Involving Children PDF Download

Ethical Conduct of Clinical Research Involving Children PDF
By:Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Clinical Research Involving Children
Published on 2004-07-09 by National Academies Press

In recent decades, advances in biomedical research have helped save or lengthen the lives of children around the world. With improved therapies, child and adolescent mortality rates have decreased significantly in the last half century. Despite these advances, pediatricians and others argue that children have not shared equally with adults in biomedical advances. Even though we want children to benefit from the dramatic and accelerating rate of progress in medical care that has been fueled by scientific research, we do not want to place children at risk of being harmed by participating in clinical studies. Ethical Conduct of Clinical Research Involving Children considers the necessities and challenges of this type of research and reviews the ethical and legal standards for conducting it. It also considers problems with the interpretation and application of these standards and conduct, concluding that while children should not be excluded from potentially beneficial clinical studies, some research that is ethically permissible for adults is not acceptable for children, who usually do not have the legal capacity or maturity to make informed decisions about research participation. The book looks at the need for appropriate pediatric expertise at all stages of the design, review, and conduct of a research project to effectively implement policies to protect children. It argues persuasively that a robust system for protecting human research participants in general is a necessary foundation for protecting child research participants in particular.

Rethinking Family-school Relations PDF Download

Rethinking Family-school Relations PDF
By:Maria Eulina de Carvalho
Published on 2000-10-01 by Routledge

This book addresses the complications and implications of parental involvement as a policy, through an exploratory theoretical approach, including historical and sociological accounts and personal reflection. This approach represents the author's effort to understand the origins, meanings, and effects of parental involvement as a prerequisite of schooling and particularly as a policy 'solution' for low achievement and even inequity in the American educational system. Most of the policy and research discourse on school-family relations exalts the partnership ideal, taking for granted its desirability and viability, the perspective of parents on specific involvement in instruction, and the conditions of diverse families in fulfilling their appointed role in the partnership. De Carvalho takes a distinct stance. She argues that the partnership-parental ideal neglects several major factors: It proclaims parental involvement as a means to enhance (and perhaps equalize) school outcomes, but disregards how family material and cultural conditions, and feelings about schooling, differ according to social class; thus, the partnership-parental involvement ideal is more likely to be a projection of the model of upper-middle class, suburban community schooling than an open invitation for diverse families to recreate schooling. Although it appeals to the image of the traditional community school, the pressure for more family educational accountability really overlooks history as well as present social conditions. Finally, family-school relations are relations of power, but most families are powerless. De Carvalho makes the case that two linked effects of this policy are the gravest: the imposition of a particular parenting style and intrusion into family life, and the escalation of educational inequality. Rethinking Family-School Relations: A Critique of Parental Involvement in Schooling--a carefully researched and persuasively argued work--is essential reading for all school professionals, parents, and individuals concerned with public schooling and educational equality.

Parental Involvement in Children's Reading PDF
By:Keith Topping,Sheila Wolfendale
Published on 2017-11-28 by Routledge

Parental involvement in children's education is a subject of growing interest and recent legislation in both the UK and USA has given formal recognition of parents’ rights. Learning to read is an obvious area where parents can do a great deal to help, and some schools have had programmes for parental involvement in reading for some time. However recent research has shown the considerable benefit in having carefully structured systems for parental involvement. This book presents a review of past and current good practice in this field. Details of a wide range of schemes developed in local areas are given in a series of short contributed papers, which are grouped into sub sections of Part 2 according to the type of project. Part 3 is essentially a manual of materials and methods. The emphasis throughout the book is on service delivery to all children although there is of course considerable discussion of remedial reading and children with special needs The book should appeal to a wide audience in education, educational administration and educational psychology.

Encyclopedia of Soviet Life PDF
By:Ilya Zemtsov
Published on by Transaction Publishers

A by-product of the amazing changes now taking place within the Soviet Union is a change in rhetoric no less than reality. Under Gorbachev, the Russian language has been changing parallel with |novoe politichaskoe myshenie - |new political thinking - with the effect that such new expressions as have flooded the Russian language clash with the less yielding realities of Soviet economy and society. The purpose of this volume is to clarify this dynamic in Soviet life, in which stagnation and decay confront hopes and expectations for liberalization. Zemtsov argues that the Soviet political language is self-contradictory, fractured into polarities of good and evil and thus depriving the Russian language of its basic subtlety, coherence, and inner logic. This work brings to life the Orwellian world of double-speak in a post-totalitarian environment. The Soviet language has two basic components: fictions which Communist ideology proclaims as reality, and realities that are portrayed in the guise of fictions. In this sense, Zemtsov undertakes to do for the Soviet language what the great H. L. Mencken achieved for the American language -show the reality of Soviet life by making plain the fictive qualities of Soviet ideology. This is a basic library reference work, a volume of indispensable utility for political scientists, area experts, and policy analysts. It offers a taxonomy enriched by a deep, personal knowledge of the Russian language by its author. |Encyclopedia of Soviet Life |is at one and the same time a basic primer of Soviet contemporary politics, a deep portrait of the psychology of totalitarian manipulation, and a sensitive appreciation of the nobler aspirations of the Russian people that is part and parcel of their great language.

The ultimate Dr. Seuss Christmas classic -- no holiday season is complete without the Grinch, Max, Cindy-Lou, and all the residents of Who-ville! “Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot . . . but the Grinch, who lived just north of Who-ville, did NOT!” Not since “’Twas the night before Christmas” has the beginning of a Christmas tale been so instantly recognizable. This heartwarming story about the effects of the Christmas spirit will grow even the coldest and smallest of hearts. Like mistletoe, candy canes, and caroling, the Grinch is a mainstay of the holidays, and his story is the perfect gift for young and old. And don't forget to celebrate Grinch-mas this Christmas season, the annual holiday tradition inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas that encourages readers to grow their hearts three sizes by doing good deeds!
